About

Who we are

Bankstown Canterbury Community Transport (BCCT) provides affordable and accessible transport to Canterbury Bankstown Local Government Area residents. We are a not-for-profit organisation that supports community members who have specific transport needs related to their age, frailty, permanent disability or temporary physical impairment.

Our fleet of vehicles include cars, vans and mini-buses that provide regular fortnight assisted shopping services and a social outings program 6-days per week. Our individual and shuttle transport services enable clients to attend personal and medical appointments, as well as social activities that allow them to remain active members of the community.

Bankstown Canterbury Community Transport is funded primarily by the Federal Department of Health and Aged care’s Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) under contract to Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

History

Starting in 1984 as part of the Bankstown Neighbourhood Centre, the service was originally set up to facilitate the hire of community buses for local groups. It was recognized at the time that there was a lack of appropriate transportation for elderly and disabled people in the area. After the Commonwealth Government enacted the Home and Community Care (HACC) program in 1985, Bankstown City Council was approached and agreed to fund the project. In 1986 it officially became Bankstown Community Transport Inc. with the purchase of one mini-bus and the appointment of a paid coordinator and driver and in 1987 our first regular services commenced.

By 1989 Bankstown Community Transport Inc. had become a separate entity and emerged as a major service in the area. In 2002 a partnership was formed with Leichardt and Inner West Community Transports to provide services in the Canterbury and Marrickville areas, and in 2004 we amalgamated with Canterbury Community Transport to become Bankstown Canterbury Community Transport Inc.

Today

BCCT currently transports over 3000 regular clients making around 60,000+ trips per year with a fleet of 18 vehicles and a team of 36 dedicated staff, many of whom speak multiple languages.

We have a modern fleet of vehicles to suit the varying needs of our clients, most of which are modified for wheelchair access.

Our buses and vans are outfitted with hydraulic wheelchair hoists with a 350kg capacity. We also have one vehicle with a 500kg lifting capacity. All of our vehicles are equipped with a state of the art Radio and GPS system and on-board computer which allows for a responsive and dynamic service that adapts to the needs of our clients.
